Newly blessed St. Vincent’s ambulance to roll in papal motorcade this week By Caroline N. Jackson A new St. Vincent’s Hospital ambulance was showered with holy water three times on April 4 to prepare it for use in Pope Benedict XVI’s motorcade when he visits New York for three days starting on Friday. It will be the only ambulance in the motorcade. This isn’t the first time a St. Vincent’s ambulance has accompanied a pope. The Greenwich Village hospital provided an ambulance for Pope John Paul on his New York visit in 1995. Four of the 14 paramedics who will participate in accompanying the current pope 24 hours a day did it back then, and all will have a day of training in preparation for Benedict’s visit. The ambulance is one of four new ones recently added to the hospital’s fleet. The pope’s staff says he is in good health, but there have been concerns about the 81-year-old’s condition because he had two strokes in the 1990s and is on heart medication. |
