Manhole blaze closes 21st St. Heavy smoke pours out of a manhole on W. 21st St. bet. Sixth and Seventh Aves. on Sunday, located near a loading dock for the former Barnes & Noble bookstore. Firefighters from Ladder 12, Engine 3, Ladder 24 and Engine 1 responded, closing off the block to pedestrians and traffic. The smoke started to decrease after about 30 minutes, but the sounds of thumping and popping continued. One firefighter at the scene speculated an underground transformer had shorted out. Firefighters stood by, waiting for Con Ed to arrive and assess the manhole, shown partially hidden by a Dumpster that was later removed. Inset: Firefighters stand by another manhole on the corner of 21st St. and Sixth Ave. that is ajar. |
