Rubin receives $10K for seniors
By Albert Amateau The Rubin Museum of Art, at 150 W. 17th St., has received a $10,000 grant from the citys SM(ART)S: Seniors Meet the Arts initiative to encourage senior citizens to engage in cultural activities. The Rubin Museum, containing one of the largest collections of Himalayan art in the West, is using the grant to fund its free Senior Day program, which offers free admission and guided tours of museum galleries, film screenings, and 10 percent discounts at the museum shop and café on the first Monday of each month. The next free Monday is March 3. Donald Rubin, 73, who founded the museum with his wife, Shelley Rubin, said, I am an active senior myself, and with age should come privileges. RMA offers a rich experience, which we would like to see more people who have free time during the day enjoy. The museum was founded two years ago with the Rubins extensive collection of art from the Tibetan and Himalayan regions. The Rubins converted the interior of several adjacent W. 17th St. buildings stretching east of Seventh Ave., formerly part of the Barneys apparel shop, to contain and display the collection. The SM(ART)S initiative is citywide program that has been funded at about $1 million.
