Haunting the hotel halls
Third in a series on the Hotel Chelseapast and present

Photographs by Linda Troeller
A Linda Troeller has been photographing life inside the Hotel Chelsea since she moved there in 1994. “When people come to the hotel, they do so knowing the place will open them up and guide them, that somehow the walls will speak to them, and that the people and energy inside will propel them forward, whether they’re social or remain more or less isolated to do their work. Either way, no one will judge them at the Chelsea.” Because the hotel is a vibrant live/work artist community that continues to thrive in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, Troeller’s work captures the mood of the Chelsea’s vibrant present, rather than focusing on its legendary past. “And when I meet and photograph a young artist with a fresh dream,” the photographer says fittingly, “I feel like I have another shot at my own.”
