Police Blotter

Union Sq. stabbing
Police charged a second teenage suspect on March 7 with attempted murder in connection with the attack, attributed to gang activity at Washington Irving High School, that broke out at Union Sq. on March 5 when four suspects beat a 16-year-old victim and stabbed him several times.

Leuis Tolentino, 17, of W. 130th St., a senior at Washington Irving, was arrested March 6 and charged the following day with attempted murder and weapons possession. Shortly after the March 5 incident, a 13-year-old student, a truant from Abraham Lincoln JHS in Brooklyn, was arrested and charged as a juvenile with gang assault. Police withheld his name because of his age but a Daily News article identified him as Brian Hodgson.

The stabbing victim, Marcus Tyrell, an East Village resident, had transferred out of Washington Irving in January to get away from gang activity and was enrolled at Chelsea Career and Technical High School on Sixth Ave. at Broome St., according to Deputy Inspector Dennis De Quatro, Ninth Precinct commander.

The incident began at about 8:45 a.m. on Monday when four youths pursued Tyrell as he came out of the 14th St. subway station, punched and kicked him, pushed him into the doors of a pizzeria at 104 E. 14th St. and left him there. At least two of them returned and stabbed Tyrell in the chest, shoulder and back with what could have been a screwdrivers or ice picks, police said. Police are seeking two other suspects. Tyrell was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition with four stab wounds.

De Quatro said the incident apparently developed from a dispute that began the previous week. De Quatro said there was no connection to the riot of teenagers last December that left Taishawn Bellevue, 17, dead and two other teens injured after a rampage in the Union Sq. Greenmarket.
