Norman Buchbinder, spearheaded Union Sq.’s renaissance, dead at 84

Norman Buchbinder, a principal in Buchbinder & Warren real estate management and brokerage company and co-founder of the Union Square Partnership and founder of the Village Alliance business improvement districts, died Saturday at his Upper West Side home. He was 84 and had been in failing health.

A funeral service attended by several hundred friends, family members and business associates was held Monday at Riverside Chapel at 76th St. and Amsterdam Ave. Rob Walsh, a former executive director of the 14th St.-Union Square Business Improvement District (the Partnership’s earlier name) and current commissioner of the city’s Department of Small Business Services, and Gene Warren, Buchbinder’s longtime business partner, were among the speakers at the service. Walsh called Buchbinder “a giant” in the renaissance of Union Square.

A more complete obituary will appear in next week’s Chelsea Now.
