Remembering and raising awareness

On Friday night, in commemoration of World AIDS Day and the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosed cases of AIDS, 50 people marched in a heavy downpour from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center on W. 13th St. to Union Square. First in front of the Center, then again in Union Square, activist Rick Weber read 150 names of those lost to AIDS. Weber participates in an annual bike ride from Pennsylvania to New York City every September to raise awareness of AIDS. Above, from left: Elisa Abelson and Anne Chesky, both of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and Ami Riely of East Harlem holding candles in Union Square after the march. “We’re concerned about the issues and raising awareness,” Chesky said. Farther Downtown, in City Hall Park there was a 24-hour marathon of reading of the names of AIDS victims.
